This whole Hollywood and video game love affair is not a healthy relationship. Hollywood can't properly adapt video games into solid action movies, and trite Hollywood storytelling motifs are holding back video game storytelling from what it could truly become in the industry that attempts to appeal to everybody. Let's just cut it off right now and focus on what is sure to be the next wave of successful video game adaptations.
Theater. I mean, of course!
Where better to start than to recreate The Last of Us in a special "one night live" production? The entire cast of Naughty Dog's hit video game will take to the stage in order to recreate the gut wrenching tale of survival and humanity. Troy Baker (Joel), Ashley Johnson (Ellie), Hana Hayes (Sarah), Merle Dandridge (Marlene), and Annie Wersching (Tess) will all reprise their roles and even the game's director Neil Druckmann will be reprising his role as director.
The Last of Us: One Night Live will be held at Broad Stage in Santa Monica, CA on July 28. Probably not coincidentally, The Last of Us: Remastered goes live on PlayStation Network the next day for the PlayStation 4.
And if you happen to miss the event or are unable to get yourself to California, the show will be streamed through PlayStation's YouTube, Twitch, and PlayStation channels. Who knows? It might be better than the planned live action film Sony is putting into works, but I think I would rather see everyone in the cast awkwardly burst into song… again.
