Naughty Dog continues to bleed its creative minds with another high profile employee hitting the road for another company. The Last of Us Lead Artist Nate Wells has departed from his position to continue his career at Giant Sparrow, the company responsible for indie darling The Unfinished Swan.
Wells confirmed that he would be join the "wild, wacky, and ultimately brilliant folks" at Giant Sparrow on his Twitter account, and he will be taking the position of Art Director.
Giant Sparrow has also confirmed on its blog that it is working on a new game, one in which Wells is sure to have a hand.
Wells marks the third high profile departure from Naughty Dog over the last two months after both Uncharted 4 Director Justin Richmond and Uncharted Creative Director and Writer Amy Hennig vacated their positions. Rumors of tension within the company followed Hennig's departure, but Naughty Dog denied them outright.
While we are certain that Naughty Dog is going to continue making critically acclaimed and very profitable games for Sony, it's hard to sit back and just watch the veterans of its most important franchises leave while it is at the peak of its popularity.
Granted, Wells was only with the company for a little over a year and had been working on BioShock Infinite prior to Naughty Dog picking him up. He seems like the kind of guy who jumps around quite often, but his work with The Last of Us should have given the company a lot of incentive to keep him.
Once is a instance. Twice is a coincidence. Three times it science, as they say. With that though, we are looking forward to Uncharted 4 and hope development can continue smoothly despite the radical changes in staff.
