I can’t even write about The Last Guardian anymore without waves of disappointment rolling in as a type. This game from Fumito Ueda and Team Ico, once destined for the PlayStation 3, was announced all the way back in, I can’t believe this, in 2009. It’s been in development since 2007.

Since its announcement, The Last Guardian has slowly but surely slipped away from Sony’s publically available roster of products. Its been worked on, according to those connected to the game, but it hasn’t shown up at trade shows or conventions in a long time.

Sony Worldwide Studios Lead Shuhei Yoshida spoke with Famitsu about the PlayStation 4 in Japan. The topic drifted towards the lack of stellar first-party efforts for the console so far. The interview eventually closed with the biggest first-party question: “What can you tell us about The Last Guardian?”

Here’s how Yoshida responded:

“Development couldn’t be better…

…That might be a bit of an exaggeration (laugh). We continue to work diligently on the game, so please look forward to it.”

That update is certainly better than one indicating that Sony is ready to cancel the game. Though, “we continue to work” on it doesn’t really inspire the most confidence for fans.

Will The Last Guardian ever release? I have no idea.
