The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are the first commercial smartphones to feature Bluetooth 5.0. The new wireless protocol is a step up from its predecessor, Bluetooth 4.2, offering improvements to audio, speed and range.

Bluetooth 5.0, which was unveiled by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG) in December, provides double the bandwidth, four times the range and eight times the broadcast message capacity of Bluetooth 4.2.

These upgrades enable the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus to do things like stream audio to two sets of wireless headphones or speakers at the same time, while allowing users to control the volume of the outputs individually.

A notefrom the SIG

The SIG notes that Bluetooth 5.0 isn’t only available on smartphones. It’s also started making its way to smart appliances and the Internet of Things, as the current standard often isn’t powerful enough to connect an entire home.
