Vivo has been pushing hard to be the first company to offer a device with a fingerprint scanner embedded in the display. The mission has been accomplished with the Vivo X20 Plus UD, the first ever device to be sold that will come with the technology. Pre-orders for the device will begin on January 24 but only for China customers.
Vivo showed off a prototype of the device at CES. We got to try it out and it worked surprisingly well. The process is not as refined fingerprint scanners you’d find in iPhone or Galaxy devices—there is a slight lag—but it still worked impressively for a first generation product.
Based on the X20 Plus design, there’s really no differences other than the fingerprint scanner living in the display. It still comes equipped with a 6.43-inch Super AMOLED display, Snapdragon 660 processor, 4GB of RAM and 3,905mAh battery. Looks wise, just think of the OnePlus 5T.
The AMOLED display is imperative for the in-display fingerprint scanner to work. Vivo is utilizing Synaptics’ Clear ID sensor. It works by emitting a light through the pixels of the AMOLED display to scan a fingerprint. This wouldn’t be possible through an LCD panel.
The X20 Plus UD will be available for pre-order on January 24 for 3,598 yuan, or $564, in China. If you want to mess around with the cutting-edge device, you’ll have to import it to the States.
