Tango Gameworks’ The Evil Within tore the horror community in half with its polarizing storytelling and old-school design. Many see the game as the true successor to Resident Evil 4, and others see it as a title that takes a few too many steps backward given the cross-generational timing of its release.

Still, it was a successful game for both Bethesda and Tango Gameworks, and it helped both companies bridge the Pacific Ocean in ways that only Square Enix and Nintendo are capable of these days. A sequel seems only natural, and this leaked job listing suggests that one might just be in the works.

NeoGAF was naturally all over the listing for Psycho Break 2, the Japanese title of the game, and speculation is running rampant that we might be seeing something within the next few months or years.

The Evil Within… flash in the pan horror

I remember liking The Evil Within while I played it, feeling the same rush that Resident Evil 4 delivered on the GameCube and that many of its imitators failed to replicate. I also remember never going back to it, unlike the countless times I’ve replayed Resident Evil 4 over the years. Back in 2014, it made my shortlist for Game of the Year contenders, but it ultimately lost out to Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor.

In other words, it’s a good game that needs a strong follow-up to secure itself a lasting legacy. Director Shinji Mikami stated that he thought the previous game would be the last he ever directed, but I wonder if he still has the creative bug and can’t let go.

Tango Gameworks and Bethesda would not comment on the job leak, so we naturally don’t know if he will be involved in the project.
