As car makers shift towards an electric future, hypercars aren’t falling behind. Most are powered by good old fashion gasoline, but the hope is to have electricity power them in the future, and the company that designs Ferraris is already starting on an electric hypercar of their own.
Pininfarina Automobili is joining the craze of creating concepts of fast, expensive and daring luxury EVs that easily capture the imagination and hopes of any car enthusiast. Its creation is codenamed the PFO and will cost between $2 million and $2.5 million.
That may seem like a lot, and truthfully it is unless you have that kind of cash lying around, but once you hear its reported specs, it’ll make you wish you had that kind of cash ready to be spent. The PFO will have a range of 310 miles, a top speed of 250 miles per hour and 0 to 60 miles per hour time of under two seconds.
In announcing its designs, Pininfarina Automobili released a couple of teaser images of what the PFO will look like. Since it only lives in concept form, it’s highly likely its design will change from now until its supposed production date, which is slated to be in 2020.
The images in question offer a lot of flashy colors, curvy lines and a silhouette of a car, but not much else. That will change at next month’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where it will unveil the car.
As is custom for every automaker that delves into luxury EVs, Pininfarina Automobili says its design improves on past EV designs for the better. “One of the main differences is a big central tunnel, because most of the battery will be between driver and passengers,” said design chief Luca Burgogno.
Deviating from the common design choice of putting the battery under the floor popularized by Tesla, Burgogno said this led to a profile that was too high for a hypercar.
It remains to be seen if the Italian automaker’s claim will be true, but it’s certainly getting us excited to see the unveiling of the car next month.
