2K Games released a bit of a hidden gem when they launched the original Darkness back in 2007. The game certainly wasn't perfect, but its unique take on storytelling and combat made it a hit with most gamers that gave it a fair shake.

Flash-forward to 2012 and you'll see 2K Games taking a new swing at their property. The Darkness II picks up a bit after where the original left off, and players will be thrust into a brand new situation for the "hero" of the series. This time around, there's new emphasis played on graphical style and over-the-top violence and gore. Trust me, both come off in waves.

If you're an Xbox 360 gamer, you can experience the same demo 2K Games has been showing press and convention goers for the last year. I happened to have the chance to play several builds of the same demo and can attest to the fact that it's changed massively since its first iteration.

The demo can be viewed in its entirety in the clip at the head of this post. Props go to VG247 for recording the play-through.

Be warned, the experience is hyper-violent. I'm talking tons of guts and gore. If that's not you're thing, maybe you'd best think twice before checking this one out. For the rest of you de-sensitized lot, The Darkness II demo presents a quick look at a shooter with impressive style and unique melee action.

The full game is set to release on the PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 platforms on February 7th, 2012.
