Marvel has spent the last decade building up its titular antagonist: Thanos. From his appearances in early MCU movies to his extended screen time in the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, he looks like a formidable opponent to the Avengers. We expected that to be, but Marvel president Kevin Feige says that within the first five minutes of Infinity War, Thanos will be the badass villain we’ve been expecting and then some.
During a panel at Comic-Con Experience in Brazil, Feige opened up about Thano’s role in Infinity War. Given he needs to handle fighting all of the Avengers, he needs to be a worthy opponent. Feige says he will, and you’ll know he can hold his own right away.
“Remember the end of Avengers, the very end of the movie he turns around in the chair, and you realize something bad is coming,” related Feige. “We’ve been teasing him for years, and the trick is, when you tease something for that long you have to deliver. Within the first five minutes of Infinity War, people will understand why Thanos is the biggest and baddest villain in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
That’s exactly what we’re waiting for. It’s no secret the MCU has a villain issue. Most are disposable generic baddies that go away after one movie. Thanos will bust that notion right away, and we can’t wait to see him beat down the Avengers.
The early scene Feige is alluding to that shows Thanos displaying his impressive abilities may have to do something with the end of Thor: Ragnarok. If you remember, at the end, the ship carrying all of the fleeing Asgardians runs into a bigger ship. It’s never revealed who is on this ship, but our money is on Thanos. This is purely speculation on our part, but it would be quite neat for it to fall this way.
Feige didn’t dive too much into detail, so we won’t know what he’s talking about until we see Avengers: Infinity War. Luckily, that’s less than six month away, with it hitting theaters May 4, 2018.
