In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos was the strongest foe the Avengers had ever faced, made ever more powerful thanks to the Infinity Stones. Remember how he made easy work of Hulk in the beginning of the movie? That was with only one Infinity Stone in his possession.
Thanos becomes increasingly unstoppable throughout Avengers: Infinity War as he collects more of the stones, eventually resulting in him snapping half of the universe out of existence. But the snap didn’t come without a significant injury to Thanos, which may make him beatable in Avengers 4.
When Thanos performed the snap, we find him gravely injured on his farm. The arm that wielded the Infinity Gauntlet is severely wounded, while the Infinity Gauntlet itself has also been damaged. Avengers: Infinity War directors said as much in a commentary track for the movie’s home release.
“See there, with the Gauntlet and his arm… the power that it takes to use all six stones is significant, and it clearly damaged the Gauntlet. And damaged Thanos permanently,” the director’s say.
As we’ve postulated before, a few plot points will be at play in Avengers 4. Not only will the movie likely deal with time travel, but it might also see the Avengers wield an Infinity Gauntlet of their own. When Thor travels to Nidavellir to create Stormbreaker, we see an unused Infinity Gauntlet. That could be what the Avengers use to defeat Thanos.
Of course, they’ll have to collect the Infinity Stones in order to do so, which might be when the time travel aspect comes into play. We’ve seen numerous set pictures from Avengers 4 suggesting that the team will at least travel back to the battle against Loki in New York.
If the Avengers do manage to collect all six Infinity Stones and equip them in the Infinity Gauntlet, they could potentially undo the damage done by Thanos. Meanwhile, if it were someone as powerful as Captain Marvel who wields the Infinity Gauntlet, she might be able to best the Mad Titan in battle.
We’ll find out when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3, 2019.
