Tesla’s Model X hasn’t had the smoothest launch, with plenty of early customers reporting buggy software and hardware issues for the electric SUV, but here’s one accident that probably can’t be blamed on the company.
A Tesla customer recently did some serious damage to their Model X’s flashy Falcon Wing doors after attempting to drive out of the garage with the doors still up. You can see the resulting wreck in the images above (via WreckedExotics, via Electreck) and it’s not pretty. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but the car took some serious damage.
It’s possible to drive the Model X while the doors are up, though Tesla’s included software that will warn you when you’re doing so. The car also features special sensors to stop the Falcon Wing doors from hitting something above them, but the company clearly didn’t think anyone would try this.
It’s unclear what speed the driver was going at the time, but it must have been pretty fast to do that kind of damage. The Model X can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds in Ludicrous Speed mode, though we’re not sure why anyone would want to speed out of their garage in the first place.
Tesla has been working hard to fix early issues with the Model X. It’s still not possible to stop human error entirely, but it might not be a bad idea to disable driving while the doors are open so this doesn’t happen again.
