Out of the more than half a million consumers who preordered a Tesla Model 3, the automaker delivered the first 30 at a handover event in California. The event was also used as an opportunity for Musk to show off the production Model 3 more in-depth—including its much talked about spartan interior.
Starting at $35,000 before incentives, the Model 3 features a 15-inch center touchscreen, a 0 to 60 time of 5.6 seconds, 220 miles of range, and enough room to comfortably fit five adults.
In addition to the standard Model 3, Musk also unveiled a long-range version, which promises up to 310 miles of range on a single charge. According to Musk, the long range Model 3 will start at $44,000 and feature a 0 to 60 time of 5.1 seconds, along with a supercharging rate of 170 miles in 30 minutes.
While many buyers are likely hoping to pay around $30,000 for the Model 3 after incentives and taxes, the costs go up sharply depending on what upgrades you want. Any color other than black, for example, will cost an extra $1,000, while 19-inch sport wheels will be an additional $1,500.
Tesla will also offer a premium upgrades package at $5,000, and includes heated seating, an upgraded audio system, tinted glass roof, LED fog lamps, and more.
Last week's delivery saw Musk make good on a promise he made nearly a decade ago—and it also begins a new chapter for the company, which will need to manufacture the Model 3 at a massive scale in order to meet demand. Musk previously said he hopes to produce as many as 20,000 Model 3s this December, with production ramping up even more into 2018.
"We are going to go through at least six months of manufacturing hell," Musk said at the handover event.
For many people, the Model 3's arrival signals the beginning of a new era, one that could see Tesla become a major player among the everyman. With over half a million preorders to fulfill and counting, the automaker certainly has a long road ahead.
"We're going to do everything we can to make cars as fast as we can," Musk said.
