elon musk laughing

Rumor has it Apple is developing its own self-driving car to take on Tesla, Google and the rest of the auto industry. You might think Tesla CEO Elon Musk would be worried by the news, but in a recent interview with German paper Handelsblatt he pretty much laughed off Cupertino's vehicular ambitions.

"It's good that Apple is moving and investing in this direction," he said. "But cars are very complex compared to phones or smart watches. You can't just go to a supplier like Foxconn and say: 'Build me a car.'" He also took the opportunity to take a jab at the Apple Watch, suggesting he isn't particularly impressed with Cupertino's first wearable.

Musk went on to admit that making a car is a smart move for Apple, though it won't be easy. "The car is the next logical thing to finally offer a significant innovation," he said. "A new pencil or a bigger iPad alone were not relevant enough."

Tesla's CEO also responded to reports that Apple has been poaching some of his top employees. According to Musk that's not entirely true. "Important engineers? They have hired people we've fired," he boasted. "We always jokingly call Apple the Tesla Graveyard."

So clearly Musk doesn't see Apple as much of a threat, though we wouldn't rule the Cupertino company out yet. The interview also touches on the rest of the auto-industry and the future of electric cars, and you can read it at the source below.
