Orion A’s molecular cloud obscures a lot of celestial information. New images captured by the telescope at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile reveal almost “800,000 individually identified stars, young stellar objects and distant galaxies.”


The images were captured by VISTA (Visible Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy). Essentially, the telescope used infrared sensing technology to “look through” the collection of cosmic dust in order to see the celestial objects it obscured. That lead to the discovery of around 800,000 new objects.


You know, a drop in the bucket.

This cosmic dust, according to the ESO, is a star nursery. It’s basically a haven for newly formed stars, and studying it is essential to learning more about our cosmic origins.
