Super Smash Bros. 3DS - Spectator Mode - 1

Spectator Mode will be available to both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of the upcoming Super Smash Bros.. Director Masahiro Sakurai revealed the 3DS version of the feature on his Miiverse account last night, and dropped a few tidbits regarding how it works.

Spectator Mode is about more than watching, according to Sakurai. Users will be able to actually bet on matches with in-game gold.

In this mode, you can watch players all around the world fight and make bets with in-game gold. Wager wisely by checking out the player names, rules, win rates, odds, fighters, and stage!!

That’s what Sakurai has to say about the image at the head of this post. He goes further in the comment section of his Miiverse update with this image and the blurb below it.

Being able to cheer someone on is what really makes spectating matches fun. This time, 1st and 2nd place will get prizes in four-player matches, and spectators can bet the gold they win on Bonus Chances.

Nintendo has made no bones about embracing the world of gaming as a spectator sport with this Super Smash Bros. entry. From the “For Glory” mode and Final Destination version of each stage to this new Spectator with wager stuff, it’s clear that Smash is being made with the hardcore community in mind.

The Nintendo 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. will drop on Oct. 3, 2014. The Wii U version still doesn’t have an exact release date, but it’s listed for the holidays of this year.
