Team Meat is finally bringing its sensational indie platformer Super Meat Boy to Sony platforms this week, but with the release comes one major change: an all new soundtrack. Co-creator Tommy Refenes confirmed the news on an official PlayStation Blog post, telling fans not to worry too much about it, though.
Long story short, we couldn’t secure the rights to include the old soundtrack with the release of the game on PS4 and PS Vita. Now don’t be too bummed because we had the opportunity to work with our favorite artists to re-score Super Meat Boy to celebrate its 5th Anniversary. Our dream team of artists consists of:
- Matthias Bossi and Jon Evans, known the world over as Ridiculon (whose most recent work includes The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth), provided the bulk of the soundtrack. They took care of The Forest, Hell, The Rapture, and The End, as well as the intro music and title screen. They also re-scored all of the cutscenes and miscellaneous ditties. Their work is always stellar and Super Meat Boy is no exception. Ready yourselves for some devilishly gruesome guitar work, my friends.
- David “Scattle” Scatliffe of Hotline Miami fame used his unique moody style to create incredible tracks for The Hospital and the Salt Factory. His mastery will leave you wondering if the shakes you’re having are from the intense levels or the creepy/industrial bliss your ears are soaking in.
- Laura Shigihara of Plants vs. Zombies renown scored The Cotton Alley in her style to give Bandage Girl’s levels a gentle, feminine touch that provides a fitting counterpoint to the hardest levels in the game.
The Binding of Isaac’s composers Ridiculon, through co-creator Edmund McMillen, also “took care of The Forest, Hell, The Rapture and The End, as well as the intro music and title screen.” Refenes adds, “They also re-scored all of the of the cutscenes.”
Why the change? Actually, the remaster of the soundtrack comes with a bit of drama with composer Danny Baranowsky stating he “no longer [has] a working relationship with Team Meat.”
You may also know that I did not do the soundtrack for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. I made a decision a couple years ago to end my working relationship with them for many reasons that don’t really need to be listed here. I apologize for any disappointment this may cause my fans.
I didn’t feel like the license fee and exposure through PSN they offered was enough to make me seriously consider accepting the deal. I decided to decline their offer. I wish them and the new artists the best of luck with the game.
Them’s the breaks, I guess. We’re fans of all the music composed by the listed talent, though, especially Laura Shigihara, who is a perfect fit for Bandage Girl’s levels. I can’t wait to finally give Super Meat Boy another run-through.
It will be released this week on the PlayStation 4 and PSN, and PlayStation Plus will get it for free through the Instant Game Collection.
