Indie gaming star Edmund McMillen of Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac fame is back with another platformer that is bound to both cause you to rip out your hair and question just how disturbing an individual can be.

Never one to shy away from his gruesome and twisted sense of humor, McMillen returns to the indie scene with The End is Nigh, a collaboration project between him and Closure developer Tyler Glaiel. Yeah, you might want to be careful with this trailer below. It gets a little… strange and possibly NSFW.

The game is set to appear on Steam on July 12, and McMillen states "possibly more consoles later."

Follow Ash as he flops his way through a future of pain and suffering. Feel his stress levels rise as you throw him into an endless swarm of decaying, mutant animal-like creatures and help aid his final epic quest… to simply make a friend (out of pieces of people he finds along his journey).

Oh, also you collect video game cartridges and tumors! if that does anything for ya.

Tumors? Great…

The End is Nigh will have over 600 stages and plenty of mini-games to swap up the formula a bit.

  • 600+ levels!
  • 12+ explorable chapters!
  • 20+ collectible and fully playable mini game cartridges! (each with their own tiny achievements!)
  • 80+ achievements that will make you feel good about yourself
  • 100s of collectible little squishy tumors!
  • loads of hidden extras and endings that you will probably see someone else find before you do!
  • and stress!

McMillen also penned an interesting breakdown of how this game came to be. The End is Nigh was born out of him and Glaiel stripping down another project they were working on. Be sure to give that a read if you are into the whole nitty-gritty backside of game development.

The End is Nigh comes to Steam next month on July 12.
