Although we’ve already seen a lengthy trailer, people forget that Suicide Squad is still 10 months away from release. That said, Warner Bros. isn’t shying away from teasing its next big comic movie, sprinkling a ton of new details in the latest issue of Empire magazine; the focal point of the new spread, of course, is Jared Leto’s Joker, who looks less mentally unstable and more like an EDM DJ.

As part of the feature, Leto opens up about his role as Joker, saying he took “a pretty deep dive” into the role, revealing a “period of… detachment.”

Leto explained that he follows the Method acting approach, meaning when he portrays a character, he becomes that character for the duration of the shoot. Will Smith previously revealed that Leto’s commitment was so intense that he never got to speak to Leto on set, just the Joker.

“This was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way,” Leto said. “It was fun, playing those psychological games.”

I’m not so sure how fun it was for his co-stars. Leto apparently sent Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) a dead rat, while he sent bullets to Smith. Sounds a little extreme, but all in the name of art.

It’s difficult to detach Leto’s Joker from the character we saw Heath Ledger portray in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which means there will always be that comparison. Whether it’s unfair or not doesn’t really matter. Our only glimpse so far of Leto’s Joker in action came in a trailer from earlier this year, but he only uttered one line.

With 10 months to go until the movie’s Aug. 5, 2016 release date, it’ll be a while before we know if Leto’s Method approach paid off. For now, check out some new Suicide Squad pictures in the new issue of Empire, including a few shots of the Joker talking to Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel (Harley Quinn) inside of Arkham Asylum.
