Subaru has finally answered the prayers of its fans by unveiling more powerful versions of its WRX sedan and BRZ coupe. The special edition variants will be called the WRX STI Type RA (short for Record Attempt) and BRZ tS (short for tuned by STI). Both cars are in Subaru’s sport line and pack a punch, something diehard fans have been waiting for.

The BRZ tS upgrades aren’t notable with raw numbers, staying at the same 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque power. However, Subaru is adding STI-tuned Sachs dampers and coil springs front and rear, flexible V-braces, new draw stiffeners for the chassis and subframe to improve steering response. On the exterior, the BRZ tS will come with lightweight 18-inch wheels, Brembo brakes for each wheel and Michelin Pilot Sport tires (size 215/40R18).

Subaru stated the upgraded BRZ “delivers the highest level of fun to drive; and pure handling delight through greater flexibility, better control and stability.”

The WRZ STI Type RA is getting 5 extra horsepower. The regular and Limited STIs already came with a 305 horsepower Turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine. The STI Type RA tops that with 310 horsepower, but it also got a few other upgrades. It’s getting a new cold air intake, high flow performance exhaust, retuned ECU and sturdier pistons. As for the changes on the outside, Subaru added a carbon fiber roof and wing, retuned VDC system, silver Brembo caliper brakes and 19-inch lightweight BBS wheels with Yokohama Adven Sport tires (side 245/35R19). To maximize performance, even the spare tire was removed.

Both cars will feature new Cherry Blossom accents around the body, including a red line on the front grill that looks similar to what VW already does with the GTI.

If you were thinking of picking one of these up, you better get on it quickly. Subaru is limiting production of each of these models to 500 units, so supplies will be quite scarce. The first units will arrive at dealers in early 2018.
