Why hasn’t this already been done?
For first person shooters, real-time strategy titles, and most gaming genres outside of sports, using a mouse and keyboard trumps a console controller, hands down. I won’t debate this, but after reading about the Stinky Footboard, I am willing to concede that there’s room for a third wheel in what’s traditionally been a two-handed tango. Just as piano players rely on foot pedals for a wider range of sound, the Stinky Footboard offers gamers greater flexibility than a mouse and keyboard alone.
The general idea is to give gamers a more efficient way to execute secondary actions that usually require “finger gymnastics” (great way of putting it, don’t you think?) to pull off. Gamers can assign commands to each of the Footboard’s four buttons. It support in-game modifiers to perform up to 16 actions, and automagically detects and loads saved profiles for whichever game you’re jumping into.
“I tried a lot of different types of PC controllers, but always came back to the keyboard and mouse. Then I thought, why should we limit ourselves to two hands to control games?,” says Luc Levasseur, co-founder and R&D Director, Stelulu Technologies. “Luckily, I had access to prototyping machinery and a president open to crazy ideas.”
The Footboard is made from steel, aluminum, and heavy duty plastics. It’s designed so that your foot is able to rest on it in a natural position to reduce fatigue, and you can also customize each switch with soft, medium, or hard springs.
I don’t know if this will revolutionize PC gaming, but I’m certainly intrigued. If you are too, then keep your eyes peeled for the Stinky Footboard’s upcoming Kickstarter campaign. Assuming all goes well, you’ll be able to pre-order one in June for $119.
