Valve's popular Steam Store is set to become more than a popular destination for game downloaders next month as it expands into many other categories of software.

In a post on the Steam news page today, Valve announced that it will be expanding the store beyond gaming next month.

The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.

More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.

This is a big step for the folks at Valve, but considering the popularity of the Steam Store as a distribution platform, it is one that is probably not filled with a whole lot of risks.

While many companies are now offering official app stores, there are certain limitations on how those apps can perform, and this may end up being an excellent alternative for those developers that wish to play by their own set rules.
