Steam may have already ventured into the living room with Steam’s Big Picture mode, but if consoles are in a war, then that was just a reconnaissance mission.

In its typically mysterious manner, Valve has put up a simple page with a countdown announcing their intentions, with the first part set to expire this coming Monday, September 23.

Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads.
This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room. Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam.

In just under 3 days, the first step of their plan (presumably for World Domination) will be revealed. Each step is represented by a symbol, the first of which is two halves of a circle. Here are the symbols or, as Valve is referring to them, glyphs:

So what does this all mean? It could be the reveal of the highly anticipated Steam Box or whatever they decide to call it. It could even be a Gaikai/Onlive style streaming service, though that doesn’t seem likely.  As a friend pointed out, the glowing blue calls to mind the PlayStation 4. At their 2010 E3 conference, Sony made a big show of bringing out Gabe Newell to talk about Steam on PlayStation. After Portal 2, however, not much happened. I say not much, but really absolutely nothing happened. This might be the continuation of that but, again, that doesn’t seem likely.

At LinuxCon 2013 last week, Gabe spoke during a keynote presentation, hinting at this reveal, saying that “next week we’re going to be rolling out more information about how we get there.” The last line of the Living Room page is the most mysterious, talking about adding us to the design process. It could be something like Steam Greenlight, but it sounds like it’s going to be something much more grand.

Whatever happens, we’ll know the first part on Monday at 12:00 p.m. CST and we’ll see the final product sometime in 2014.
