Space exploration is one of the go-to activities in video games because it provides so much opportunity to let both players and game designers do what they want. There's no cars or cities to reproduce one-to-one, physics don't necessarily need to be replicated. The first few moments of the trailer for Starlink, Ubisoft's space-combat game, had me excited, and then they revealed the hook:

Do we need another toy game?

Starlink is a toys-to-life game in the spirit of LEGO Dimensions, allowing you to customize your ship and take it into the game to show off to other players.

There's a lot of potential here for Ubisoft to make good on some of the promises of games like No Man's Sky, letting us play a space-exploration game with our own ship and with our friends. The biggest question Ubisoft will have to answer is, why should we buy more toys to play their game?

The game is set to release on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One in Fall 2018, so we're looking forward to seeing where Ubisoft goes with it over the next year.
