Yo-Kai Watch Movie 2

Pokemon isn't the only victim of Yo-kai Watch's warpath throughout Japan. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was denied the number one spot at the Japanese box office during its premiere weekend after it fell to Yo-kai Watch the Movie 2: King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!

If we're talking dollars here, Star Wars: The Force Awakens did indeed make more money because of the inflated ticket prices, but it only managed to sell 800,000 tickets over the course of its debut weekend in 371 theaters. Likewise, Yo-Kai Watch maxed out at 975,000 tickets in 358 theaters, and it is expected to destroy the $64 million in domestic sales that the first movie saw in Japan.

Japan measures box office success in terms of ticket sales, not money, putting Yo-kai Watch the Movie 2: King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! in the number one spot.

In the meantime, back in the States, Yo-kai Watch has not proven to be the same cultural phenomenon as Pokemon, with the first game launching to lukewarm praise and nobody really talking about the anime. And throughout the rest of the world, Star Wars destroyed an entire encyclopedia of box-office records.

Japan's just gotta do its own thing. What else is new? Is there no stopping Yo-kai Watch?!
