EA is taking every measure to assure fans and shareholders alike that the complaints that dogged the first Battlefront won’t affect the second. In this week’s earnings call, EA said during a Q&A session about Star Wars Battlefront II that the game is “three times the size of the original game at launch.”
The answer came in response to a question about DLC or a season pass for the game, a question EA dodged. After the initial reveal, word from EA suggested there wouldn’t be anything like that, though EA has since backed away.
Initially, though, Battlefront II‘s creative director had said that they didn’t want to segment the community this time around, which seems like a good idea.
Like splashing in a puddle
2015’s Star Wars Battlefront was a gorgeous game, and a fun one, but there wasn’t a whole lot there. The single-player campaign was little more than a distraction, and the multiplayer lacked the depth to make the game worth the full retail price of $60, let alone the extra $50 the company wanted for the full season pass.
The game sold well, to the tune of a whopping 14 million units, but that lack of depth can be killer with an online game. EA needs to keep people playing. The near-constant stream of Star Wars-related shows, movies, games, and other material should keep the franchise in people’s minds, and if the game is good enough, that should drive them back. If the experience stops feeling fresh, though, all bets are off.
Star Wars Battlefront II is set to hit PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Nov. 17.
