The Humble Square Enix Bundle has gone live with a healthy helping of 16 games. In its ranks, you'll find pretty much everything that represents the "new" Square Enix, the one that's hip and cool with all the phat Western kids and their AAA releases. The one that looks like it's trying so hard to be EA or Ubisoft.
Ugh, it's like watching your grandfather trying to sing "Blurred Lines."
At the basic level are a bunch of PC classics that weren't even published by Square Enix when they first hit the shelves. Thief Gold, Mini Ninjas, Hitman Codename 47, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, and, wait for it, Daikatana. Thanks for that one guys.
At least Anachronox is in there. Not that it is a great game or anything, but this forgotten gem is the closest PC gaming ever came to copying Final Fantasy's style. It's a interesting one at least.
Following up at the average price, you can score Deus Ex: Invisible War, Deus Ex: The Fall, Hitman: Absolution, Battlestations: Midway, and the Nosgoth Veteran Pack. At the set $14.99 price, we have Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Just Cause 2, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition, and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days.
Can we just call this the Humble Eidos Bundle to clear up any confusion?
I guess I have no room to complain. $15 for $169 worth of admittedly good games is a great deal no matter how you spin it, and I already own all the games I want in this bundle. It's just whenever I see the name "Square Enix," the old geezer inside of me still pictures Parasite Eve, Kingdom Hearts, Brave Fencer Musashi, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc. I think my teenage self would have a heart attack at the thought of setting my own price for all of those games, and my old man self can't divorce the two sides of the schizophrenic entity that is now Square Enix.
Why doesn't a Square Enix sale nowadays get me pumped? Is there disconnect between Square Enix in Japan and Square Enix in the West? Why isn't Brave Fencer Musashi or SaGa Frontier available digitally yet!?
Granted, not too many of Square Enix's Japanese games are available through the PC, but some are, including two of its biggest games of all time. Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII come to mind? Where's the love for your origins, Square Enix?
More games are promised to be revealed over the course of the 2 week bundle. Anyone holding out for Square Enix's token Japanese PC game, The Last Remnant, to make an appearance?
