Trying to control Spotify through voice controls has always been a process of working closely with device-specific voice assistants, whether it'd be Siri on iPhone or Google Assistant on Android and Google devices. The streaming giant wants to change this and is apparently working on its own voice assistant that will work directly in the app.

Twitter user Hunter Owens stumbled upon the feature while using Spotify on his iPhone. When opening the app, he noticed a white circular button with a microphone at the bottom right corner. Tapping it gave him some suggestions of the types of commands that it could answer, like "Play my Discover Weekly," "Show Calvin Harris," or "Play some upbeat pop."

It's unclear if Spotify's assistant will work specifically by tapping the button or just through a voice command, similar to how "Hey, Siri" and "Ok, Google" activate their respective voice assistants. There's also no information as to when Spotify will make the feature available to more users.

Spotify has been rumored to be working on its own hardware for some time now. Among the speculated products it has been developing is a speaker. It would make a lot of sense then for Spotify to create its own voice assistant to go along with the speaker. It's all speculation at this point with Spotify failing to officially announce anything, but it does fall into place nicely.

Regardless, it'll be interesting to see how Spotify's voice assistant works on mobile devices. Will it be a useful feature or will it be ignored?
