It’s been two years since the release of Splatoon, and Splatoon 2 is set to drop on the Nintendo Switch in a few weeks.
The folks at Digital Foundry took an in-depth look at how Splatoon 2 performs when compared to the original on hardware that’s older by a generation. The game certainly does better than its predecessor on the Wii U, but by how much?
We’re looking at a title that can achieve 1080p at 60fps. When the action picks up or there are more things to render on screen, that resolution dips down to maintain the frame rate. Splatoon 2, then, has a dynamic resolution that responds to whatever the game demands.
The Inkopolis Square, though, is set in 1080p at a targeted 30fps. I can speak from personal experience when I say that the frame rate dips down often while in the game’s hub space, but the resolution is crisp as heck.
Nintendo clearly made the choice to deliver 60fps gameplay at the cost of 1080p, and I’m absolutely fine with that for a multiplayer-focused effort. Frame rate dipping during actual, ranked multiplayer is unacceptable, especially on the competitive scene.
Splatoon 2 is looking good, and it’s set to release on July 21, 2017.
