Among the list of things they may want to look at including in the next version of the Spider-Man theme song is "raking in huge wads of cash," because that's definitely something the new Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, is capable of. After its first weekend, Spider-Man: Homecoming has pulled in $117 million at the North American box office. Estimates by Sony and others had put the movie's opening-weekend take below that of the critically panned Amazing Spider-Man 2. The movie exceeded Sony's expectations by almost half again, and Spidey's inaugural Marvel flick is now the third-highest grossing movie of the year, behind Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

This is great news for Sony and Marvel alike. For the first time, the two companies partnered to bring the wall-crawler into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while bringing Marvel's talents to bear on this movie. With a great opening weekend rolling in, Sony is sure to be looking forward to further collaboration. The movie is still hovering at a 94 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes as well, continuing a trend of well-received and highly successful comic book movies so far this year, with both Wonder Woman and Guardians rated fresh and pulling in big profits.

"This is a great result, and a gigantic win for Sony and for Marvel," said Sony exec Josh Greenstein in a press release. "Spider-Man is one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Universe, and Homecoming is a fresh take."

Third time's the charm

The Hollywood Reporter notes that, when you adjust for inflation, the rankings in Spider-Man movies shift a little. If we take the opening weekends at face value, only 2007's Spider-Man 3 sits above Homecoming. Adjusting for inflation, though, Homecoming sits beneath Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 3, and The Amazing Spider-ManSome of the profits of these movies are skewed by the fact that Spidey always debuts over the 4th of July, and that oftentimes the numbers available are for four-day weekends. Even with that shift in the rankings, though, this is still good news. After Spider-Man 3 and both Amazing Spider-Man movies did what they could to tank the web-slinger's rep, the movie still managed to open well and exceed expectations.

If you haven't seen Spider-Man: Homecoming yet, don't wait – we loved it. And stay through the credits. All of the credits.
