Sony this week shared a few more details about its upcoming animated Spider-Man movie, and it features a surprising star. Rather than stick with Peter Parker, Sony said it's going to introduce Miles Morales, who features in the Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man series, to the big screen for the first time.

The news is significant because it will introduce Morales to a larger audience. The character has become a cult figure among Marvel diehards, but he is much less known to people who don't follow the comics. Peter Parker has featured in every major big screen adaptation from Sony thus far, so it's about time someone else got the spotlight.

The upcoming animated Spider-Man movie will be unrelated to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which features Tom Holland playing Peter Parker. It also won't have any connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe; it will be a standalone feature that could potentially spawn its own universe.

It won't hit theaters until 2018

It's unclear who the antagonist of the upcoming movie will be, and no actors are currently attached. However, we do know that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, known for directing The Lego Movie, will executive produce. Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey have been chosen to direct.

Not only is it cool that Sony will put the spotlight on Morales but it will expand the ethos of Spidey beyond Parker. There are only so many times we can see him get bit by a radioactive spider.

Sony's untitled Spider-Man movie is currently scheduled for a Dec. 21, 2018 release.
