Sony is really doing a great job painting PlayStation as a friend of the indie gamer. Sony now sports the most friendly atmosphere to get games published on the console scene, and cross-buy options even take most of them on the road with the PS Vita.
1,000 developers have been licensed to develop for all three major PlayStation platforms, and over 20 million of 21 self-published games have been sold so far, an attach rate of 3%. Outlast and Don't Starve have both broken a million each, and are about to be joined by a handful of more recognizable titles.
At a Sony event today, PlayStation VP of Publisher and Developer Relations Adam Boyes confirmed that Spelunky and several other popular indie games would be making their debut on the PlayStation 4.
Joining Derek Yu and Andy Hull's infinite platformer are Escape Goat 2, Nidhogg, Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-a-Fide Edition, Ironclad Tactics, Apotheon, Starwhal: Just the Tip, Chasm, Source, Drifter, and Jamestown Plus.
Each and every game now has its own official PlayStation trailer, backed up in its own PlayStation Blog entry from the original developers. See below for a quick description provided by the designers themselves. Before we begin, I nod towards Escape Goat 2 and Chasm as the best looking of the bunch, but all of them look fabulous. Sony is doing a great job picking out the best of the best.
Skulls of the Shogun is a mash-up of turn-based strategy and fighting-game flare, scientifically engineered for lightning-quick rounds, thoughtful strategic play, and a frequently inappropriate sense of humor with its tongue planted firmly in cheek.
We have the most fun playing Nidhogg in front of our TV with friends. Sharing a TV and controllers is way more comfortable than crowding around someone's desk and sharing a keyboard.
The theme of Escape Goat 2 is transformation. As you manipulate hidden machinery, walls move around and blocks settle into new places. Things look different when you're done with the room (especially if you employ your mighty horns to their best use).
Starwhal is a vehicle for that sort of experience we all cherished with our friends where the mood oscillates between giddy laughter and serious competition.
After playing a round of Jamestown, it's probably not surprising to hear that Final Form Games is run by two brothers who grew up playing video games in the early 90′s.
In Chasm, players take up the role of Daltyn, a young soldier sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a mining crew in the remote mountain town of Karthas. Upon arrival you learn the town has been cut off from the outside world by supernatural forces.
Ironclad Tactics is a fast-paced, card-based tactics game set in the American Civil War… with robots!
The combat in Apotheon draws mainly from our collective background as multiplayer FPS gamers. We were never much for button-mashy or combo based fighters, which I think have a bit of a stranglehold on 2D action games (especially melee focused ones).
Drifter is an open-world, sandbox, space trading game with a procedurally-generated galaxy 100,000 light years across, made up of tens of thousands of star systems to explore and features an original soundtrack by composer Danny Baranowsky.
When I say that Axiom Verge features glitches as a major game mechanic, please don't take that as some self-reflexive fourth-wall-breaking joke about dusty old cartridges or the like. Nor am I going to pile on glitch after glitch just for the sake of being different.
