Also known as the PlayStation Phone, the Sony Xperia Play has been circulating as a rumor for what seems like ages now.  And even though there was a commercial during the Super Bowl, this is the first official confirmation of the new handset with details.  Thus far the only carrier announcement is Verizon in the United States, but there are sure to be more global partners, and there is nothing ruling out other companies over here.

There will be 20 game publishing partners at launch, including:

  • Sony Computer Entertainment
  • Digital Chocolate
  • Digital Legends
  • Electronic Arts (EA)
  • Fishlabs
  • Gamehouse
  • Gameloft
  • Glu Mobile
  • Handy Games
  • Namco Bandai
  • Polarbit
  • PopCap
  • Trendy Entertainment
  • Unity Technologies

"This Spring, expect to see a lot of people with their heads down and thumbs up," said Peter Farmer, Head of Marketing for North America, Sony Ericsson. "Xperia™ PLAY combined with the power of the Verizon Wireless network gives you everything you need in a smartphone and the one thing you want – the ultimate gaming experience."
