Sony announced a new 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector today at CES 2014, promising to launch the new product this summer for between $30,000 to $40,000. The new device will be capable of creating an image up to 147-inches in size when placed a short distance from the wall.

The 4K Ultra Short Throw Projector was described using the “Life Space UX” concept by Sony Corporation CEO Kazuo Hirai, who offered a few possibilities for what the device can do. Besides watching high-definition movies, the projector could also be used to transform empty walls into dynamic images showing anything from city streets to waves crashing on a beach.

The idea of a powerful projector that can display 4K images from a close distance is extremely appealing, but Sony’s estimated price seems out of range for most consumers. It’s possible the cost could come down in the future, but for now this device is clearly intended for an extremely select market.
