Virtual Reality Headset

Oculus Rift might not be able to bring its highly anticipated virtual reality headset to consoles, but it's created enough buzz that bigger, better known names are getting interested in getting in on the VR game.

Rumors have been floating around for the last year or so that Sony has been working on something of this nature, and a report from TechRadar says the company is ready to unveil their tech at this year's Game Developers Conference, which takes place in San Francisco starting on March 17.

Between Move and 3D TV, Sony hasn't shied away from trying out new tech with the PlayStation 3, and if the rumors are true, then the PS4 looks no different in that respect.

TechRadar's inside source says that Sony "has deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it," and that "the quality and resolution are really, really good."

Unveiling the device at GDC has two potential benefits for Sony. By revealing it a few months before E3, it'll have time to shift focus to the software they're preparing for it, as TechRadar notes, and more time to get investors excited about it before the expo.

If virtual reality is going to truly take off, a console solution – little config, easy setup – might be the place to do it. We'll see what Sony has to show in just under a month, headset or not.
