We have a ball game here, folks. Microsoft dominated the months of November and December and sold a grand total of 6.6 million Xbox units in the quarter, including both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles. Sony, on the other hand, did not win the holiday months, but prior to the Xbox One's price drop, the PlayStation 4 managed to outsell its rival to make up for it.
Based on figures in Sony's financial results, the PlayStation 4 sold a whopping 6.4 million units worldwide, putting it just shy of both the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One combined. This contributed to the latest known total sales figures of the PlayStation 4, which stood at 18.5 million back in early January.
The PlayStation brand name itself sold 7.5 million units, pointing towards a downward trending PlayStation 3 and the PS Vita, the latter of which is still looking for its place in the world.
Sony reports that its Game & Network Services Segment pulled in ¥531.5 billion ($4.3 billion) in total for the quarter, a climb of 16.8 percent year-over-year. It credits this climb "primarily due to an increase in PS4 hardware unit sales, the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates and a significant increase in network services revenue, partially offset by a decrease in PlayStation 3 ('PS3') hardware and PS3 software sales."
Sony as "the PlayStation company," indeed.
