Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet 7

Sony has begun rolling out a new software update for the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet, which finally fixes the Stagefright vulnerability. The firmware is currently only available to select hardware variants, but Sony is expected to make it available to all imminently.

This update comes with build number 23.4.A.1.264, and it's based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. It's not a major release, then, but it's certainly a welcome one, finally making the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet immune to the Stagefright vulnerability.

Stagefright exploits a flaw in Android's media viewer, allowing attackers to take control of your device with malicious media files, such as MMS messages and videos. It still affects millions of Android devices, but manufacturers are working to change that with updates just like this one.

XperiaBlog reports that this release is currently available to the D6503 variant of the Xperia Z2, and the SGP511 and SGP521 variants of the Xperia Z2 Tablet. If you've received an update notification on your device, we recommend you install it as soon as possible.

The update should be made available to all other variants of these devices soon.
