Ever since the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy ended, Sony has struggled to develop a consistent Marvel franchise even though it has a number of characters to its name. Among those is Spider-Man, Venom and 900 others.
Trying to capture a little bit of the magic that made the Marvel Cinematic Universe the prime movie franchise, Sony is going all-in in crafting its own Marvel franchise that will go under the banner Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters. At least that is what it’s being called internally, according to a new report.
Some of the movies that will fall under its umbrella is the upcoming Venom movie and Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel made in coordination with Marvel Studios. Other projects Sony has in the works includes movies for Morbius, Black Cat, and Silver Sable.
It should be noted that the 900 Marvel characters Sony has control of are all set within the Spider-Man world. Most of these characters don’t carry the same weight as Iron Man, Thor or Captain America, but it’s a commodity for Sony and it is going to try to capitalize on it.
As for the chances of Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters being successful, it could go either way. It’s a project very early in development, but most “franchise universes” studios have tried to establish following the MCU’s lead have failed spectacularly. DC struck out with the DC Extended Universe, while Universal’s Dark Universe only went one movie deep (The Mummy) before it was cancelled.
The only other universe still going is Warner Bros.’ MonsterVerse centering around Godzilla and King Kong. It’s had two successful movies (Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island) so far with two more (Godzilla: King of Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong) on the way.
It’ll be interesting to see if Sony can have more success with its Marvel universe, starting with Venom in October.
