Earlier this week, Samsung started distributing an update to patch a bug that resulted in some users noticing a red tint on their Galaxy S8’s display — and now customers are reporting another problem with their handset’s screen.
Numerous Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus owners have taken to reddit to vent their frustration that their unit’s Infinity Display is “bleeding.” Although, the issue only appears to be visible when looking at black lines on a white background.
So, what does bleeding mean? Put simply, it’s a term used to describe when parts of a panel are illuminated when they’re not supposed to be, which causes an image to “ghost” to the edge of the screen (as can be seen in the image above).
Don’t expect a firmware update to fix this issue, though
Bleeding is actually a common defect with OLEDs, and technically speaking, is a result of the use of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon. When Samsung finally switches to indium gallium zinc oxide, it shouldn’t be a problem anymore.
