It seems like we've finally hit that point. Publishers are realizing the hype train is in motion for the next generation, so it's time to get the lead out and start dropping prices on fully retailed games. Anarchy Reigns was only $40 on release last week, and now Sony's own first party game, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, will be joining in on the drop.
Amazon, Walmart and GameStop all have the sneaking raccoon's latest adventure available on their websites for a measly $40, roughly $20 below the typical retail price of $60 found on most games. It remains to be seen if this generous price will extend past the pre-order offer and jump to full retail value once the game is released. Sony has never made any comments on Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time being made available for any price less than the typical one, and they have yet to comment on it now.
Three major retailers making the same mistake is highly unlikely. Expect confirmation soon.
Not only will the game be cheaper, but extra content will also be available for those who choose to pre-order. The Amazon and GameStop pre-order deals allow access to Sly's para glider and a Seal Team inspired costume for his hippopotamus sidekick, Murray. Of course, the game is also a poster child for Sony's Cross-Play offer, so purchasing the game for the PlayStation 3 will also land you the PlayStation Vita copy via PSN.
That makes two different versions of a sweet game for only $40. I can see the price dropping for some budgeted titles, but the folks at PlayStation have always held Sly Cooper in slightly higher regard than that. Oh well, why waste time complaining? I have some shopping to do, it seems.
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will be available for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita on February 5th.
