Sling Media announced Tuesday the Slingbox M1 and SlingTV as additions to its hardware lineup, replacing current models Slingbox 350 and 500. Both boxes deliver the same placeshifting technology we’ve grown to love from Sling Media.
The Slingbox M1 is priced at $149.99 and features dual-band Wi-Fi, component and composite input/output. The main improvement for the M1 over the 350 is the inclusion of integrated Wi-Fi, the 350 required a separate Wi-Fi adapter to add this capacity.
SlingTV will retail at $299.99 and features on-screen TV main menus, soft remote (app), content filtering, Rotten Tomato rankings, scoreboard data when watching sports programming and HDMI. SlingTV looks to be a rebranding of the Slingbox 500, in fact existing Slingbox 500 owners will be able to download the SlingTV update to their units.
For those unfamiliar with Slingmedia or the Slingbox family of hardware devices, the technology essentially allows you to stream your own TV/DVR content to just about anywhere you are, as long as you have access to the Internet. All without a monthly fee.
Slingbox M1 will be available through Sling.com, and online partners starting July 20. SlingTV will be available late August. Slingbox 500 owners will be able to download the update in late August as well.1
