Maybe Silent Hills would’ve been terrible. Maybe Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro and Junji Ito, three masters of their respective fields, would’ve made an unplayable mess together. But we’ll never find out, because Konami cancelled it so they could make more pachinko machines and slot machines.

Meanwhile, Crimson Peak director and once-upon-a-game Silent Hills contributor Guillermo del Toro continues to feed the insatiable fan desire for more morsels of what could’ve been. In an interview with horror website Bloody Disgusting, del Toro talked a bit about some of the design elements of the cancelled game:

We had a great experience and had great story sessions with hundreds upon hundreds of designs. Some of the stuff that we were designing for Silent Hills I’ve seen in games that came after, like The Last of Us, which makes me think we were not wrong, we were going in the right direction, The thing with Kojima and Silent Hills is that I thought we would do a really remarkable game and really go for the jugular.

We were hoping to actually create some sort of panic with some of the devices we were talking about and it is really a shame that it’s not happening. When you ask about how things operate, that makes no f***ing sense at all that that game is not happening. Makes no f***ing sense at all.

I keep hoping these creators will find a way to work together, but with Kojima’s employment status in question and del Toro having sworn off making games, it seems less and less likely. To hear him compare it to The Last of Us is a surprise, and I can’t help but wonder what parts he sees as being in common. It’s unlikely those details will ever see the light of day, though, or at least not for a few years.
