HD ports of your classic favorites were all the rage last generation, and the trend has already kicked over onto the current consoles with games like The Last of Us and Tomb Raider. Why stop there when we have a totally viable HD handheld on the market?
Konami is among the first to dive into give the HD treatment to a PSP game for a PS Vita release. Two games, actually, as both Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories have been confirmed for a PS Vita release in the European region. No word yet of an American release.
Generally, most PSP games are already available on the PS Vita since any can be downloaded through the PlayStation Network and simply installed on the hardware. No sweat, right? Well, not every game is available through the PlayStation Network as some were only released on physical UMD discs.
Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories don't fall into this category as both can be downloaded already for $10 and $30 respectively, meaning Konami is going to have to give them a seriously good treatment to make them competitive.
Both games have also been released on a console beyond the PSP in the past, Silent Hill: Origins enjoyed a PS2 port shortly afterward and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories playable on the Wii. The HD PS Vita versions will make them more accessible than ever before, but I've always believed Silent Hill was best enjoyed on a huge television screen with all the lights turned out.
Konami has not had success with porting Silent Hill into HD in the past. The Silent Hill HD Collection was one of the most reviled PlayStation 3 releases, and the Xbox 360 one was even more hated since Konami refused to patch it with essential updates. We're hoping it has learned from its mistakes and does a better job with these.
With that in mind, what are some high profile PSP games you can't yet play on a Vita? Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is the most obvious absence, and a few more Square Enix ports could use the treatment as well. What would you like to play?
