Dead or Alive 5: Last Round hit PCs just last week and, despite missing some pretty major features, the game is getting play and, more importantly, some serious mods.

Of course, there are already plenty and will be plenty more of the type of mods you expect to come to a game known for its ultra-sexy female characters.

My favorite mod, though, has nothing to do with any of that.

A modder known as Esppiral is bringing us more of Sega’s classic martial arts tale, Shenmue, than Sega itself is ever going to give us. Fighting games are known for their huge, weird rosters of characters, but perhaps the weirdest roster addition came in the form of characters from Sega’s Virtua Fighter series joining the Dead or Alive cast. Esppiral picked two of of those characters – Jacky and Akira – and reskinned them as Shenmue‘s protagonist Ryo Hazuki and his mortal enemy, Lan Di. Even the Hazuki dojo from which Ryo Hazuki hails has been re-created.

Our last interaction with Shenmue, at least in the U.S., was back in 2002 with the Xbox exclusive Shenmue II. That game, of course, left off on a huge cliffhanger. This mod might be the closest thing old school Shenmue fans come to getting some closure for the series.
