Don’t be alarmed, but the DC Expanded Universe is actually having fun in the first trailer for Shazam! This is about the furthest thing away from Batman v Superman, which was dark and gritty and full of brutal violence.
The first trailer basically spends time introducing the characters and the titular superhero. In the movie, a teenager named Billy Baston (Asher Angel) is chosen by a supreme wizard to take over the mantel as Shazam, a powerful superhero with extreme strength and extreme sarcasm.
That’s because when Billy turns into Shazam (done by shouting Shazam!), he’s a grown man (played by Zachary Levi). So, he’s a young big in a grown-up’s body, with several super powers to boot.
Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
Shazam! is set in the DC Universe, which means he exists beside characters like Batman, Aquaman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Boy, what I wouldn’t do to see the character interact with Ezra Miller’s Flash.
Shazam! is set to hit theaters on April 5, 2019.
