It's been a long time coming, but the oft-delayed next entry in WayForward's seminal platforming series finally has a set release date. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse has been slated for a launch on October 23rd in the states.

For those who have never played the series, this should give them plenty of time to run through the two older games. Both available through the Nintendo 3DS eShop are well worth the price. The original Shantae was published by Capcom on the Game Boy Color and can be picked up for $5, where as Shantae: Risky's Revenge is a DSi game and will set you back a bit more at $12.

It is stuck at a DSi price, and I don't think those can get discounts.

The first game is longer, has more content, and is a technical marvel for the original Game Boy Color's hardware, however Risky's Revenge is about as fun as "metroidvania" platformers get. The extra price is worth the quality animation and great sense of carefree atmosphere from a happier age of gaming. The new game also continues the story of the trilogy, so if you want to see how Shantae loses her powers, you'll have to play it.

Once Shantae and the Pirate's Curse goes live, WayForward will turn its focus to an HD reboot to the series that will appear on all platforms.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse will be releasing on the Nintendo 3DS, and it will cost $19.99 at launch.
