An extended trailer for Shadow of the Tomb Raider was released on Friday, and while it doesn’t include actual gameplay, it does tease some of the new title’s big themes, including how Lara will deal with the aftermath of Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Clearly, Lara has been deeply affected by her previous adventures, evolving from timid survivor to skilled killer. The trailer for Shadow of the Tomb Raider shows Lara methodically eliminate an entire squad of mercenaries, before killing a leader of a Mayan tribe.
Lara soon realizes that her decisions might have dire consequences, as she reaches the peek of a pyramid during a solar eclipse. The other two Tomb Raider titles were dark and gritty, but Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks like the most violet yet.
Since the reboot in 2013, Tomb Raider and its sequel have become among the coolest single-player narrative adventures available. Let’s hope Shadow of the Tomb Raider closes out the trilogy on a high. We’ll likely see more at E3 in June.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is set to release on September 14 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
