Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released on Sept. 1, giving it an entire month to top the NPD list and become the best selling game of September. Instead, sports fans denied Konami its victory, slipping NBA 2K16 and Madden NFL 16 into the number 1 and number 2 spots respectively.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was forced to endure a third place victory despite its universal acclaim. See the top ten games below.

NBA 2K16 did so well that it had the biggest sports game launch of this generation. As always, the NPD Group only does research on physical games, so digital sales might have painted a different picture. However, even during its launch week, Metal Gear Solid V got beat out by Destiny on PlayStation Network.
And as far as console exclusives go, Super Mario Maker topped the list at 445,000 units since launch.
Compared to last September, software sales dropped 3 percent to $465.6 million, and hardware sales fell 27 percent to $313.5 million. And speaking of hardware, the PlayStation 4 closed out the month on top once again, and with the $50 price drop and large offering of holiday bundles, Sony’s hardware is bound to reclaim the top spot in October as well.
Sony commented on its first-place placement to VentureBeat.
“As we kick off the holiday season, we would like to take a moment to thank fans for making PlayStation 4 the best-selling console and #1 in software sales in September. PlayStation 4 was the number one console for NBA 2K16, Madden NFL 16, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and FIFA 16. Including the highly successful limited edition console bundle, PS4 also led retail sales for Destiny: The Taken King.”
Microsoft also chimed in with its take on September.
“Xbox One continued to see strong momentum in September on the heels of Forza Motorsport 6 and EA Sports FIFA 16, with solid year-over-year growth in console sales and strong engagement on Xbox Live. This holiday Xbox One owners will enjoy the greatest games lineup in the industry and in Xbox history, led by Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Star Wars Battlefront, and the ability to play Xbox 360 games. Xbox One owners will have all of this on the fastest, most social Xbox experience ever with advanced hardware such as the Xbox Elite Wireless controller. Xbox fans and first time console buyers can look forward to an epic holiday.”
And the world continues to spin. See you next month, NPDs!
