Is there a market for high priced Ultrabooks?

Sometimes you have to throw caution to the wind and hope everything works out, which is exactly what Samsung's doing with its new Series 9 Premium Ultrabook. It's a $1,400 Ultrabook that flies in the face of conventional wisdom suggesting Ultrabooks need to come down in price, not go up. In fact, Samsung's newest model is tagged with a price that's more than twice as high as some of its competitors' models. Is it worth the markup?

We'll let you be the judge of that, though we can tell you what this thing is packing. According to the press release, the Series 9 Premium wields a 13.3-inch display with a Full HD 1080p (1920×1080) resolution, still a relative rarity among today's Ultrabooks. It also features an Intel Core i7 3537U processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB solid state drive, 3W stereo speakers, 1.3MP webcam, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a battery that's good for up to 5.8 hours based on the Mobile Mark 2012 benchmark.

The Series 9 Premium measures 12.35 inches by 8.6 inches by 0.51 inches and weighs 2.56 pounds. Construction consists of an aluminum single shell body featuring polished edges, all of which has been sand-blasted to help thwart fingerprints.

We gave the larger 15-inch Series 9 a 9/10 verdict when we reviewed it last year, but Ultrabook prices have fallen sharply since then. With the PC market in such a slump, it will be interesting to see if consumers are willing to pay a premium for a 13.3-inch Ultrabook these days.
