Samsung has teamed up with ESPN to bring virtual reality sports to Gear VR owners. Starting this Thursday, those with a headset and compatible Galaxy device will be able to stream this year's X Games in VR for free.
Samsung will be showing the Skateboard Vert, BMX Street, and Skateboard Street Amateurs competitions from Thursday through Saturday via its Samsung VR app. All you need to enjoy the streams is a compatible Galaxy smartphone. You can get a taste for what the streams will be like in the teaser trailer below.
Here is the schedule for the events Samsung has confirmed so far:
- Thursday, July 13, 6:45 p.m. ET – Skateboard Vert
- Friday, July 14, 6:00 p.m. ET – BMX Street
- Saturday, July 15, 6:00 p.m. ET – Skateboard Street Amateurs
You can download the Samsung VR app from Google Play. It's available on the Galaxy S6 series, the Galaxy S7 series, Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy Tab S2 and Galaxy Tab S3, and of course, the new Galaxy S8 series. Technically, you don't need a Gear VR headset to enjoy the streams, though the VR experience is a lot better if you have one.
We're hoping this is the start of something big, and Samsung will be working with ESPN to deliver more sports in VR in the future. For now, however, only the X Games is confirmed.
