Billions. Lots and lots of billions.

According to a new report from Yonhap News, Samsung spent 11.5 trillion won (approx. $10.2 billion USD) on marketing in 2016. 4.4 trillion won (approx. $3.9 billion USD) of that went to actual advertisements, a 15 percent increase over what it spent in 2015. The bulk of this spending is said to have gone towards promoting the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge.

Samsung, however, was not alone in this astronomical spending. LG also chimed in with 1.3 trillion won (approx $1.1 billion USD), a 21.4 percent increase over 2015. The main difference, it seems, was that LG focused on marketing its home appliances as opposed to its phones.

Perhaps spending will drop some this year

As Yonhap News pointed out, some of Samsung's spending was an attempt at damage control following the recall of the Galaxy Note 7 due to its battery issues. It isn't clear how much the company spent in the wake of this event, but without such a situation in the mix this year, perhaps the amount spent will drop a bit.
